Where the Toyota 4Runner takes you
A body-on-frame 4x4, which in Georgia means one specific thing: this is a car cleared for the roads the others are not. The Abano Pass into Tusheti - 70+ km of unpaved single-lane hairpins above 2,800 metres, open roughly mid-June to early October - is the headline, and it is why people book a 4Runner. Koruldi Lakes, the Tskhratskaro Pass and deep-winter mountain trips are the same category. Talk to us before you book if Tusheti is on your plan, so the car, the insurance and the dates line up. Everything gentler it does without noticing. Background: do you need a 4x4 in Georgia.
Living with it
Five seats in the 2016-2019 cars, and the more affordable of our two 4Runners. Expect the honest trade of a proper off-roader: commanding view, huge boot, unbothered by rough surfaces, and fuel consumption that reflects all of it. On a Tusheti or Svaneti itinerary that is the right trade. On a week of city and coast it is more car than the trip needs, and the Forester will be cheaper and calmer. If you need seven seats, the 2020-2025 4Runner is the one.
